Support of Excavation
What is a timber pile: A timber pile is the trunk of a tree, trimmed of its branches, used for deep foundation support.
Support of Excavation (SOE) Systems are temporary earth-retaining systems intended to control the soil to facilitate a safe and efficient space for construction. In some instances, the SOE System can double as permanent structural support. There are two most commonly used methods to provide support of excavation: soldier piles and lagging, and soil nailing.
Support for deep excavations (exceeding 10 – 14 ft) requires additional bracing to stabilize such as sheet piles. These systems include tiebacks, cross-lot steel struts, rakers, helical anchors and top-down concrete slabs.
